Watched Folder locks up in Windows 7 and Windows 8; will not allow me to change the watched folders

After having multiple crashes while trying to get Mendeley set up on my desktop and laptop (Windows 7 and 8), I am now trying to add in PDFs from folders on my computer and set up one small folder to be watched. Apparently the Watched Folder crash has something to do with which folder is being watched, although I couldn't find a clear explanation of what folders are allowed to be watched. Regardless, when I go to Options - Watched Folders, I can't change which folders are watched. All the options are greyed out. The only way to get access to the checkboxes seems to be pressing "Enable" which, of course, immediately causes Mendeley to be non-responsive.
