Different folders with SAME articles = different references in Word. Why?

Hey Everyone! In the context of my grad school degree, I have been writing my thesis, chapter by chapter. Unfortunately, I have made, 5 folders in my Mendeley Desktop. What was an attempt at staying organized, turned out worse than planned. When I started duplicating my references from one folder to the other, so that each folder may be a stand-alone file, different references emerged... At the time I did not know that Mendeley, doesn't filter for identical references but rather, treats them as different and even updates the numbering when they come from different folders! What seems to happen is that Mendeley treats each reference as a different one possibly because the same reference is being output into the same WORD document, yet coming from different folders in Mendeley desktop such as: (McDonald, 2001a), (McDonald, 2001b), (McDonald, 2001c), every time I add the reference in the same document… Dumb me, now I have copies of each document across different folders… Does anyone know how to get rid of the a,b,c for duplicate entries, without affecting the folders in which the references come from? I just want ONE (McDonald, 2001) if that makes sense. Thanks!
