bibtex export and umlaute (special characters)

I have problems using Umlaute (special characters) in the author name field in Mendeley Desktop when doing an export of the bibliography as bibtex format. In an entry for a book I have Jájá as author. When exporting it to bibtex, I get: author = {J\'{a}j\'{a}, Joseph}, which leads to problems in the bibliography, since bibtex does interpret the letters \ and ' independently as correct letters and I get something like [J'92] (with actually the accent being on top of the '9') lateron. For my bibtex to work correctly (discover, that indeed á is only one letter), I would need the entry in bibtex as follows (with extra brackets around what represents the letter á): author = {J{\'{a}}J{\'{a}}, Joseph}, then everything works fine, bibtex knows this is only one letter and can process it to become [JáJ92]. At the moment I manually correct the exported bibtex file, which is not really nice, when updating it quite often. What is the official way to go here? I would also be happy, if I could enter some escaping characters in Mendeley Desktop in the author field in order to produce those needed extra brackets for the moment to avoid correcting the bibtex file manually. (I tried with entering the brackets directly in Mendeley, J{á}J{á}, but this produced {J\{\'{a}\}j\{\'{a}\}, Joseph} i.e. escaped brackets, which is also wrong). Many thanks in advance :)
