varying citation styles in MS Word

I need both long and short citations in the chapter endnotes of my book. The first of several references to a single source needs to be in long (Chicago 16) form; subsequent references to the same source are to be in short form. This is especially important because many of the endnotes wont be citations at all but quotations from interviews etc; citations will be interspersed. If this must be done manually, how exactly should I go about the process, to save myself from fumbling about dangerously?
