I'm looking for a really rudimentary explanation of the relationship between Mendeley desktop and the .pdf files that live in various places on my computer. Strangely, I cannot find any Mendeley literature containing this kind of rudimentary explanation. In terms of "Adding" and "Importing" something, I want to understand the difference between the following 3 things. (BTW, I have Mendeley preferences set to organize and rename my pdf's, which I'm happy with.)
1. When does Mendeley leave a file exactly where it is, but learn a path/link to where that file lives on my hard drive?
2. When does Mendeley take the actual file and move it into the folder structure(s) it has set up as directed, i.e., reorganizing ("tidying up") and renaming?
3. When (if ever) does Mendeley leave the original file as is, but make a duplicate of it?
I feel like I need to understand these distinctions before finally deciding on way I want to set Mendeley to behave in relationship to the file structure as it already exists on my hard drive.
[OS X 10.9; Mendeley desktop 1.10.1]
