Referencing books when you want to show both original publishing date and current edition's date

Often I have to use books that have been published a long time ago and that have been republished recently. Usually, in the bibliography one would want both original date to show and current edition's date to show. However, when I put the normal format (for the Harvard style anyway), say 2000 [1973], it shows up as "n.d." when I insert the reference into my Word document text. The same happens in the bibliography. It should be showing up with both dates. This means that I manually have to go in and add the original publishing year - or the current publishing year - on all books like that, which becomes a big job, not to mention keeping track of when things were originally published. Is there a fix for his that I don't know about?
