Can't insert citation if I've edited the details

Hi there, I am having problems inserting citations if I've made any alterations to the details using the Mendeley desktop. So for example there was a paper where the details were not extracted correctly so I simply edited them on the right hand side and typed in the information. Then I clicked details are now correct. When I now try and insert the citation like normal (and it works for references where I have done no editing) nothing happens. No citation appears and no error message. Sometimes Word then crashes and I have to restart everything.... I am using Word for Mac 2011 version 14.4.3
