No download methods work

I'm unable to download files to Mendeley. The only things that works is if I drag a previously saved pdf onto the Mendeley desktop screen. Here is what doesn't work: If I save to a watch folder, then Mendeley accepts the file, but when I try to open it, it says that the file type is unrecognized or damaged. The file in the watch folder opens fine in a pdf viewer, and it works in Mendeley if I drag and drop it from the watch folder to the Mendeley screen. If I use the Mendeley sharing shortcut, e.g. on the AIP website for Applied Physics Letters, it saves some non-pdf file that I can't open, although it has the proper title and other information in the Mendeley article details box. Since this button is on the website, and I have access to the AIP journals, I wouldn't expect there to be a paywall issue. In the following case, I've read that it may be a paywall issue, but I'll describe it anyway: If I use the JavaScript "Save to Mendeley" button out of Firefox, it appears to save a pdf file (the file is "somenumber.pdf", but it doesn't open, provides no information in the details box, and the pdf filetype icon does not appear in the Mendeley desktop directory list. So I'm 0 for 3. Please help. Thanks
