Numbering references at the same location with letters (1a,1b; 2; ...)

I'm trying to follow a journal's referencing styles, and have selected the journal's name in the citation style, but it is not quite matching up with the example articles I have looked at and the written style guide. I presume I need to edit the style somehow, but am a bit lost on how to do that. Specifically, multiple references at the same point in the text should have only one number and then be further denoted by letter. Future references to only one of these should then show up with a number and letter. For example: The findings presented agree with previous reports in the literature.(1) However, one of these previous reports was flawed in its methods.(1b) References 1 a) A Author, B Writer (2004) Journal of Made Up Science, 13:204-207, b) C Person, D Other (2006) Proceedings of My Imagination, 22: 123-124 (if helpful, the specific style I am trying to work with is New Journal of Chemistry, which apparently is the same style as its parent journal Royal Society of Chemistry)
