Copy-pasting references between Word documents

For practical reasons, I am currently working on several Word documents, which I will have to merge later on. Every part contains Mendeley-managed references, but the final document will have one single bibliography. I have noticed that copy-pasting text including references between Word documents seems to convert the references to plain text. How can I work around this? The two options I want to avoid: - scan the entire final document for the references and -manually- reconvert them to correct Mendeley references, generating one correct bibliography - having to generate bibliographies before merging, and having to -manually- re-arrange them in the final document
