I'm not going to get the past 3 hours back, so I figured I'd share about a bug. I think a similar (same?) issue may have been reported already without resolution:

When you anchor a frame in LibreOffice *to* a character, any attempt to insert a citation at a position later in the document will fail. If you insert a citation before the character/anchor point then citation insertion is successful. If you have the frame anchored *as* a character ("in line with text") it works after; if you have the frame anchored to the page it works after that page. If that's not the case I'll try to post back, but if I don't you can assume this has fixed the problem (for me, you milage may vary). I hope this helps!

TL/DR: if your Mendeley LibreOffice plugin is crashing LIbreOffice when you insert a citation after a frame or object, check if you have objects anchored *to* characters. If so, change the frame anchoring to page or *as* character and try again.
