It seems that Mendeley is incorrectly importing author information on a rather large number of papers (definitely more than 50% of my library of ~2000 articles). In particular, it is mistaking authors' first intials for last names, and vice versa. For example, an article written by J Smith appears as J.S. And when expanded, it looks like J, Smith. When these references are converted into in-text citations and placed in bibliographies, the problem persists. A citation for multiple authors ends up as a jumble of letters: C. C, DJ. C, B. T. etc.
I guess I'm looking for help on two fronts: first, is there anyway of fixing my library without fixing the author data for each article individually; second, what can I do to make sure that when I import articles, Mendeley imports correct author metadata.
I'm not sure how relevant this is, but I'm using a Mac with OS 10.9.2. I import articles via Google Scholar, medline (OVID), and a few other engines, as well as from specific journal websites relevant for health services research. It does seem, however, that the articles most often affected by this issue are imported from Embase or Web of Science (though not always). I'm happy to provide screenshots or a copy of my library if that would help.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
