Cannot open files unless they remain on my hard drive?

Hi, I use Apple OSX I switched to Mendeley today to try and free up space on my hard drive. I have used many cloud solutions but Mendeley came recommended so I thought I would give it a try. I moved 867 PDF files to Mendeley and then deleted the files off my hard rive. I could not open any of the files unless I moved them back to my hard drive. So, I have 867 files in Mendeley and on my hard drive, so whats the point? Am I doing something wrong? How do I move them to the cloud, use the desktop app, use my iPad, and delete them from my hard drive? Also, none of the files open in iPad, even the ones I authored and saved as a PDF. I click the "Open With" option and nothing comes up.
