Windows 2013 insertion issues

I am using windows 8.1 and Word 2013. The plugin is in place and works however, it gives cause for concern. It takes a long time to insert (over a minute) or manually edit. It also, creates a strobe effect especially in outline - flashing menu items during the insertion process. In page view only the cursor flickers.
